#Repost @variousmediumsinc with @get_repost ・・・ B O D O K O III The Japanese word Bodoko translates as “life-cloth”. It refers to a textile that is mended, patched and passed down from one generation to the next becoming stronger and more beautiful with use and the patina of time. This quilt began life as a collection of well worn and outgrown jeans of various hues and dimensions. At its most beautiful when it has been well worn, denim can be unpicked to revealed the
patina of wear under stitches and seams. These photograms of time inspired the structure and showed me the layout of the piece. “Keep some room in your heart for the unimaginable.” -Mary Oliver Repurposed denim, natural indigo, vintage Japanese fabrics, cotton poplin, backing of wax resist indigo from Hmong people of Vietnam. #Repost @variousmediumsinc with @get_repost ・・・ B E G I N N E R S M I N D This piece takes its starting point from the Japanese characters for the word Shoshin from Zen Buddhism, meaning “beginners mind.” Beginners mind refers to the idea of of having an attitude of openness and of letting go of preconceptions. It was with this intension that I began work on this quilt, piecing the fabric and manipulating the calligraphy without an idea of where it might end. The abstracted results have I feel, a new found balance and harmony. “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.” -Shunryu Suzuki Vintage Japanese textiles, African Mosi cloth, hand dyed natural indigo and repurposed denim. #beginnersmind #shoshin #reimagine #wallart #sustainablymade #laboroflove #contemporarytextiles #sustainablymade #objectsmadetobetreasured

#Repost @variousmediumsinc ・・・ S H A V E D I C E This quilt started life as a “Nobori”, a Japanese shop banner or flag used to advertise a store or stand. In this case it came from a Kakigōri shop selling shaved ice. I came across it in a vintage store and was immediately drawn to the vibrant color which evoked the beach and summertime in me long before I understood the characters meaning.
As with many quilts ordinary materials are reinvented and reconstructed to create something all together new. “Shaved Ice” retains a feeling of high summer and gives a nod to the mass market advertising imagery of the Pop Art movement.
It is the first in a series of pieces that use Nobori as their starting point. “Once you 'got' Pop, you could never see a sign the same way again. And once you thought Pop, you could never see America the same way again.”
-Andy Warhol Reclaimed Japanese cotton Nobori, hand dyed natural indigo and up cycled cotton shirting. -Coming with me to @fieldandsupply @huttonbrickyards October 11th-13th #collectabletextiles #objectsdesignedtobetreasured #consciousconsumer #contemporaryquilt

O D E T O A N N I A L B E R S Anni Albers, German born American textile
designer, artist and student of the Bauhaus,
refused to be labelled. Her experimental and ground breaking work blurred the traditional boundaries between art and craft and remains tremendously influential to this day.
This quilt, inspired by her work is my salute to the artist and her quiet subversion. In mind were the spontaneity and flow of her abstact geometric forms and the hand made “imperfections” of her materials. * “Being creative is not so much the desire to do something as the listening to that which wants to be done: the dictation of the materials.” -Anni Albers
Reclaimed denim, natural indigo, vintage Japanese fabrics (linen, cotton, silk, ramie ), natural cotton batting, wool. Coming with me to @fieldandsupply next week #fieldandsupply #huttonbrickyards #collectabletextiles #consciousconsumer #objectsmadetobetreasured
