Tidemarks 2 was my reaction to the destruction and displacement caused by Hurricane Sandy. In October 2012, along with the garbage and detritus of every day life, my city was strewn with the water damaged belongings of it's inhabitants, piled up in mountains along the coast and on sidewalks throughout the city. To me, it was a haunting illustration of the link between our lifestyle choices and changing climate patterns.

Collecting, documenting and recording this moment was a big part of the project. However, when I returned to the studio, it seemed important to create from the destruction.

The compositions which resulted were collected into short videos.

Tidemarks #1  video, uses images that document the debris left behind by the storm, in situ.

For each of the three videos, I created a link to a unique QR code. I then made a needle point cushion replicating each code. QR stands for "quick response" and underlines the urgency required in combating global climate change.

The resulting cushions, whilst existing as decorative pieces in their own right, have a message "locked" inside.

Using of a smartphone, the cushions can be scanned and the linked video plays. Each cushion is a time capsule, capturing, documenting and reacting to the event. A record of a moment hidden in plain sight.
